About El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico

Founded in 1962 by pianist and bandleader Rafael Ithier and Eddie "La Bala" Perez following the breakup of Cortijo y su Combo, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico quickly became one of the most influential and enduring groups in Latin music history. Known worldwide as “La Universidad de la Salsa,” the band helped define the sound of Puerto Rican salsa through tight arrangements, vibrant percussion, and storytelling rooted in everyday life.

With legendary vocalists such as Andy Montañez, Pellín Rodríguez, Luis "Papo" Rosario, Charlie Aponte and Jerry Rivas, the group built a catalog of timeless hits that bridged Caribbean rhythms with urban Latin American experiences. Their music has remained consistently relevant for over six decades, influencing generations of salsa, tropical, and Latin pop artists.

From classic dancefloor anthems to socially observant storytelling, El Gran Combo’s sound became synonymous with Puerto Rican identity both on the island and in the diaspora. Through constant touring across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa, they earned their reputation as one of the most important ambassadors of salsa music worldwide.

Under the leadership of Lead Singer Rafael Ithier, Eddie "La Bala" Perez, and Manager Ralph Cartagena,  El Gran Combo remains an active recording and touring force, standing as one of the longest-running orchestras in popular music history.
